Bread for BTUs

Did you know that it takes approximately 500 BTUs to properly bake a one pound loaf of bread? Bakewell Farm has established an exchange called "bread for BTUs." Value is added to account for the amount of energy required to mix, ferment, shape and bake that loaf of bread as well. When you donate a small armful of seasoned hardwood (oak, maple, apple etc.), you will receive a fresh loaf of bread from our oven.

Bread for BTUs provides the opportunity to exchange a thing of value (firewood– a natural, renewable resource) for a thing of added value (bread). People without cash can connect directly to the production of bread. This program creates opportunities for social interactions that reach into the community and establishes a platform for making new friends.
