When baking bread, yeast is the catalyst that initiates multiple, interdependent processes to produce the perfect loaf. The outcome of this process depends on fostering a series of events under precise conditions. John Paul Lederach, Professor of International Peacebuilding at the University of Notre Dame, has used yeast as a metaphor in his work on conflict resolution, mediation, and peace building. He suggests we not only need to think in terms of critical mass, but also in terms of “critical yeast” when working for social and/or cultural change.
This course is ideal for groups working to strengthen as a team. Students will focus on principles of yeast using a reflective process to engage the imagination and foster positive interaction, while producing delicious bread and a stronger, interconnected, and more mindful team.
